Class Experience

Recorder private lessons will be first and foremost, an opportunity to learn and improve your recorder playing.

My approach is to build as large and diverse a repertoire as possible for the student. This gives us many opportunities to discuss music theory concepts as we are analyzing the music together. Often, exercises or practice will arise from the song itself, engaging the learner further in the song and in the experience of practicing in general.

We will always begin with a quick check-in to make a connection. Then, we'll do a short warm-up, and get right into the music.

I use a keyboard to facilitate tempo and pitch reinforcement for the students. I learned that if I play the recorder at the same time as the student, they may not be able to distinguish their sound from mine. To remedy this, I play along with them using the keyboard, which also gives them something external to line up with.

I will demonstrate, then we practice together, and finally I ask the student to play back to me what we had just practiced, without my help: I do, we do, you do.

I have been described in reviews as a warm, generous, patient, teacher who loves music! My teaching style in this setting is to connect to my students through joking around, short conversation, lots of interaction, and of course, sharing a love of music. I often transcribe music that students like to play. Even if the music is above the student's skill level, I can often arrange the song so that it is developmentally appropriate.

I look forward very much to learning with you!

Hello! I am a professional music educator and farmer living in Maine with my wife and three small children in the forest. After a long span of touring as a professional musician, I most recently spent several years as a music teacher in a diverse urban public school before transitioning my teaching online due to circumstances surrounding the pandemic. I now teach remote music classes exclusively, right here on Outschool! I am thrilled to serve students in a larger online network, through active and creative music education.

In nearly all of my general music classes, I help students cultivate or deepen fundamental musical skills that I believe we all need: perceiving and keeping the beat, moving meaningfully to music, and singing various song forms. Additionally, I expose my students to a wide range of culture through an authentic and diverse repertoire, including traditional, folk, and modern music from America and throughout the globe. Another critical component of my classes is active music-making with voice, percussion, and instrumentals. My classes range from learning construction vocabulary through song for preschoolers, to digital music production for savvy teenagers, to advanced improvisation for music scholars.

I am also an experienced composer and performer. I often take songs requested by students and transcribe the music so we can learn it together; I love a good transcription challenge. And, if I can't find a song that meets the needs or interests of my students, I'll write one for them! Classes, too!

I look forward to learning with you.
