Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
This ongoing class will be one-on-one reading tutoring, using a novel or chapter book chosen by the learner. The main purpose will be to find a book or books the student enjoys and is excited about reading, while working on any needed skills. A few books I've read with my learners are: "Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief," by Rick Riordan, "Jennifer Murdley's Toad" by Bruce Coville, "Smile," "Guts," and "Sisters" by Raina Telgemeier (Graphic series); and "Primer" by Jennifer Muro & Thomas Krajewski. This is to give you an example, the possibilities are endless! (And of course the books we pick will be books on the reader's level. This means they will challenge but be enjoyable to the reader).
Week 1: During the first session, we will read a short story and discuss the characters. Then we will decide on a book to read together.
While reading the book, we will cover some or all of the following skills, depending on the reader's needs:
Week 2: Setting
Week 3: Characters
Week 4: Plot
Week 5: Event Sequences
Ongoing: Vocabulary
Week 6: Theme
Week 7: Main Idea & Details
Week 8: Cause & Effect
Week 9: Draw Conclusions
Week 10: Describe Figurative Language
Week 11: Identify the Point of View
Week 12: Make Predictions
Ongoing for each chapter: Summarize
Fluency as needed
We will also work on using strategies such as Making Connections, Questioning, Inferring, and Visualizing on an as-needed basis.
