Private Reading Tutoring

These private guided reading tutoring sessions are designed for youngsters who need or want one-on-one reading instruction.  The model for this course is based on the reading classes that I offer as a group.  I highly recommend that you first have your child attend one of my group guided reading classes before booking private guided reading sessions.

The work that we do in this class depends on the learner's needs. Below is an example of some of the work that we engage in during the private tutoring sessions:

For young learners, the goals of this class are to help them decode unfamiliar words, learn basic sight words, expand their vocabulary, read fluently, and gain reading confidence. Therefore, the student may review word families and sight words and read early guided reading books in fiction and nonfiction.  To improve students' ability to decode (read) words, they will engage in decoding activities from word structure, context clues, word work, and other techniques. To improve fluency, students will practice echo reading, choral reading, and partner reading. To expand vocabulary, students will review sight words and practice new vocabulary. And, students will read new stories and reread familiar stories during each session by reading books on-screen. The combination of these activities will ensure that children make rapid growth in their ability to read. 

For more advanced learners, the goals will be to improve their reading, fluency, and comprehension through a variety of literacy activities.

Every reading class meeting is different and involves many teachable moments. Therefore, the teaching techniques used depend on the learners' needs while reading that particular passage. Consequently, it is impossible to state exactly which techniques and strategies will be used during each class.

I think that all children can learn to READ well. I help children to BELIEVE in themselves and assist them to ACHIEVE their reading potential. (The image for this class is a symbol of books opening and flying, alluding to the fact that children will enjoy and fly through reading books throughout their life.) My goal is to help children develop a love of reading so that they become lifelong readers.

Teacher Expertise:
I hold a B.S. in Psychology, a Master's Degree in Education, and a Ph.D. in Education.  I am a licensed k-8 teacher, a licensed Reading Specialist, and a certified ESL teacher.

Throughout my life, I have taught children, adults, and my child. I have worked as a tenured education professor, an elementary teacher, a reading specialist, and an ESL teacher. I love to read, and I love to work with children.  I am delighted to be teaching on the Outschool platform, and I look forward to working with you and your child.
