Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Every student learns to read differently. I love the challenge of finding out what my students already know and figuring out how I can help them discover new techniques to become better readers. No matter what level of reading I teach, I make sure my students are inspired to read for meaning first. Without meaning, there is no motivation to keep reading. I encourage students to bring what they know to the text, and then we go from there. I allow students to struggle a bit, because the struggle is where learning happens naturally. However too much frustration often develops an aversion to reading, so I make sure my teaching happens in the "sweet spot" in between. When students need help, that's when I provide suggestions and guidance.

SCHEDULE
**************
Please message me with schedule requests if you don't see one that fits your schedule. This class is set up to meet twice a week for 30 minutes. Some students need more days per week, while others may do fine with just one day. We can make anything work--just ask!

INSTRUCTION
******************
I individualize my instruction based on your students unique needs, however below is a general description of how I approach different readers.

**BEGINNING READERS**
These are students who know their alphabet, letter sounds, and are reading some simple words. Students progress from reading simple sentences to reading early reader books with several sentences on a page. We work on...
-Decoding strategies
-Beginning phonics (consonants, vowel sounds, blends)
-Sight word recognition

**EARLY READERS**
These are students who read simple sentences and have some decoding strategies. Students progress from reading early reader books with several sentences per page to reading beginning chapter books, like Frog and Toad. We work on...
-Complex decoding strategies
-Self-monitoring
-Intermediate phonics (vowel blends, digraphs, word endings)
-Sight word recognition

**FLUENT READERS**
These are students who have many decoding strategies, but need to take the next step in reading more complex texts. This might involve work on phonics and spelling patterns, comprehension strategies, or even just building up stamina for longer books. Students progress from reading beginning chapter books, like Frog & Toad, to reading longer chapter books with fewer pictures. We work on...
-Fine-tuning decoding strategies
-Comprehension strategies
-Spelling or phonics work
