Class Experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Have you ever wondered how your child's reading skills compare to grade-level expectations? Can you see them struggling but don’t know what they need or how to help? Why are they asking you to spell every other word they want to write? If you are asking yourself any of these questions I am here to help! In this one-time class students will take a variety of low-pressure assessments so that I can evaluate their current levels in reading and spelling. Each of these assessments follow a similar structure beginning with the easiest content and getting more challenging as they go. Each assessment will end when I find the student’s current level of ability; this format has the added benefit of preventing students from getting too frustrated or overwhelmed. If you are concerned about a specific area, I am happy to alter this session to meet your child's needs. The assessments used may include some or all of the following: -The Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST) - The PAST assesses a student's ability to hear and identify, isolate and manipulate, word parts, syllables, rhyme, onset-rime, and phonemes. These skills are crucial in learning to read. -The LETRS Phonics and Word-Reading Survey - This assessment covers letter names and sounds, high frequency words, and decoding words based on phoneme patterns. -The LETRS Spelling Screener - This test identifies which spelling patterns and rules students know and which they need to learn. -Decodable Text Running Records - Students will read a short text, chosen based off of the results of previous assessments. I will record errors and their fluency. They will be asked comprehension questions based off of the passage. After scoring these assessments you will receive a detailed written report of your child’s abilities and areas for growth, as well as recommendations for instruction.
