I'm a licensed reading specialist in two states with nearly two decades of experience working with children ages 6-18 with neurodiverse learning profiles including dyslexia, dysgraphia, hyperlexia, attention deficits and executive functioning challenges. ----------------------------- What can I do to help? Using a battery of both informal and formal literacy assessments I will: 1. assess for early literacy skills (letter knowledge, phonemic awareness, etc.), decoding, spelling, comprehension and fluency 2. determine your learner's strengths and recommend instructional goals and strategies 3. provide anecdotal observations about noticed behavior related to metacognition (how your learner thinks about their thinking) as well as strategies and coping skills. ----------------------------- Where can this be done? All assessments can be done remotely on the Outschool platform. It is recommended that students complete the assessments in a quiet setting free from distractions. ----------------------------- When is it best to assess my learner for reading and spelling? Assessments can be done at any time of the year. Typically, it is recommended that learners follow-up with progress monitoring and/or diagnostic testing every 1-4 weeks to reassess progress. Multiple assessments can be done in one session but depending on your learner’s pace, two sessions might be necessary. ----------------------------- Why should I assess my learner for reading and spelling? If you have a learner that is struggling to decode, spell or comprehend written text, an assortment of literacy screening tools can help parents or homeschool educators tailor instruction to recommended areas of improvement. All learners progress at their own rate. An assessment helps learner’s create a plan to set academic goals to build confidence, self-esteem and strategies for future success. ----------------------------- What assessments can be used? Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a graduate of the Reading Specialist Program at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. It was there that I was trained to assess and analyze a battery of literacy assessments. After graduating from TC I spent 12 years at Eagle Hill School in Greenwich, Connecticut, a school for students with dyslexia, and other neurodiverse learning profiles. It was at Eagle Hill where my training was put to practice. I have assessed over 200 students and counting in a variety of literacy assessments and have used those assessments to inform my instructional practices.
