What's included

1 live meeting
25 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1-2 hours per week. From time to time, there may be written activities to support the musical skills worked on during that lesson. These theory assignments may require some writing or performing. Students are also encouraged to practice 1-2 hours a week in order to master the skills learned. This time can be divided up any way that is most beneficial for the student and their family. I would like to encourage the students to practice the skills that they have learned for a few minutes each day. A certain time amount is not suggested, because each student learns at a different pace. Practice at home will be needed in order to master the skills learned in class. It is my ambition to create a fun and inviting classroom, which will encourage them to want to practice in order to master the skills learned.
Assessment
Students will be informally assessed at each lesson through a variety of activities, including answering questions, clapping rhythms, singing melodies, and playing the material in their lesson books.

Class Experience

In this ongoing class, students will have the opportunity to take private piano lessons once a week, beginning with the level of instruction they are currently at. I welcome any age student at any level of musical knowledge. They will have individual instruction working on basic music skills, keyboard knowledge, as well as different genres of music and composer information.

If the student is a beginner, we will begin by becoming familiar with learning about the keyboard and how different sounds are created. We will learn basic signs and symbols, note values, Italian terms for music, finger numbers, rhythm, and note names. Students will continue each week by building on the skills from the previous lessons, continually learning more advanced skills.
If the student has prior musical experience, the first class will be spent assessing their knowledge and at what level they need to continue their instruction. We will begin at the level they are currently at, moving toward a more advanced level with each lesson.

All students will spend time in class playing songs on their current playing level as well as being challenged with new skill level experiences. They will clap rhythms, sing melodies, play games, write music, and demonstrate their musical knowledge through a variety of musical based activities.

Music is a skill that is built on knowledge learned in previous lessons (much like math skills are built). I have a great deal of experience working with students in the public school setting, in my private studio at home, and in online teaching. I spent many years teaching middle school chorus and general music. Through the general music program, I taught group piano and guitar lessons in class. I am a very enthusiastic teacher and believe in giving a lot of positive encouragement and reinforcement as students move through their musical experiences. During lessons, time management will be used in a variety of ways as we spend time playing the piano keys, clapping, singing, and writing basic music theory skills needed. I look forward to meeting your musician in the classroom!
Learning Goals
In these private piano lessons, students will be taught the basics of playing the piano by learning correct posture, fingering and hand positions, notes on the piano, music signs and symbols, note values and rest values. They will begin to understand how music elements, such as rhythm, harmony, tempo, timbre, and dynamics work together to create a song. Lessons will be filled with interactive activities through clapping, singing, and writing musical signs and symbols. Students that are continuing piano lessons will continue to build more advanced skills, beginning with their current skill level.
