Class Experience

This course is for students 8 and up who have an interest in piano. All levels are welcome.

Each week is structured to include a regular piano lesson and a specialty lesson.

Note: I do not post the second weekly lessons until we have agreed upon dates and times. THE LESSON CAN BE SCHEDULED TO A DIFFERENT DAY AND TIME and must be during the same week, no refunds for missing the second lesson. Private lessons are SET as first posted.

The regular lessons are what we accomplish in normal lessons: Piano fundamentals, taught through a method book, nice pieces, some technique and theory. There is just not enough time in a normal 30-minute lesson to cover the full range of what it means to play piano.

The separate specialty lesson is our chance to fulfill that goal: whatever is needed that week, we will cover, whether it is a song you want to learn, chord reading, improvisation, jazz, a pop song, technique or theory, composition, songwriting, you name it.

In a regular beginner piano lesson, I will cover piano basics such as posture, positioning, fingering and note-reading using a method book which includes music that is fun to play and is set up in a progression that is best for learning quickly and well.
In an intermediate lesson, we will build upon the knowledge the student already has from previous lessons and books. Because basic note-learning has been accomplished we are adding the notes on the ends of the piano and the upper and lower regions of the staves. We are working on making pretty music through good tone and more technically challenging pieces. More details are involved and are worked on intensively.
In more advanced lessons, we are working on repertoire, standard keyboard literature, technique appropriate to such, ornamentation, etc.
Learning Goals

Parental Guidance
Classes are held as per the schedule listed. Because there are two classes in one week and it is fairly intensive to do this, there are weeks when there are no lessons at all. This allows for more practice time or a break if needed from the keyboard.
Supply List
This will depend on the level of the student. I will assess and let you know what books are needed. A piano (or keyboard with pedal --up to the first two years of lessons) is required. After the second year of lessons, an acoustic piano is required.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I have been a professional musician for many years, primarily working as an accompanist for school choruses and bands and church choirs. I hope you will be my next student!

If you want to take piano or clarinet lessons, please sign up for ANY section. I will teach you at your level.

I have been a music teacher (piano, general music, clarinet, composition and theory), a language teacher (ESL and foreign language classes) and a math tutor in public schools and private schools in GA, FL and NY.

I am a member of the Rochester Piano Teachers Guild.

I studied music at Florida State University and the Eastman School of Music. I have been a professional musician my entire working life, primarily as an accompanist for churches, schools and theaters. I have also accompanied vocal and ballet studios.

I believe music is a natural part of being a human, and I treat is as a fun, relaxing way to enjoy life.

I meet people where they are in their musical journey. I build on what they already know. I have ADHD. I try to make my classses friendly for neurodivergent learners.

I have a little dog 🐕 , and we love to go on long walks together in nature!

My kids are grown and work in science!
