In this course, students will learn how to play piano in the style of "popular music"-the type of music you might hear while streaming. Students will learn the fundamentals of the style and practice "jamming" or creating their own melodies; they can also choose a specific song they would like to work on. Improvisation is a fun, relaxed way to learn how to play the piano. Students will learn the major and pentatonic scales and how to improvise with those notes. They will start improvising...

I have a bachelor's degree in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia, a master’s degree of Kodály in Music Education from Loyola University Maryland, and 10+ years experience of Blues/Boogie Woogie improvisation on the piano. I'm incredibly passionate about passing on what I've learned about piano improvisation to students, as I wish I had more access to high quality improvisation instruction when I was younger.
1-2 hours of practice is recommended per week.
Materials Students will need a keyboard or a piano. It is recommended to point the camera at the keys if possible.
25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
