Description

Class Experience

Learners will learn the fundamentals of music in a fun and relaxed way.
Please refer to my lengthy profile description for my experience. In short, I have been teaching music for 20+ years and I have a Masters in Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music, as well as a Bachelors of Arts Degree from California State University East Bay.
Pianists are encouraged to practice at least 5-10 minutes, (or more!) as many days a week as is possible. Progress can be made when students practice consistently rather than trying to cram musical learning right before the lesson. I have found that pianists are more inclined to improve if they practice in small amounts several times during the week rather than sitting for long amounts of time once or twice a week. Homework may be assigned each week, and depending on the pianists preference and extracurricular schedule, we will decide how much homework will be assigned. Some pianists like one song/assignment a week, others like a few more.
Required: -Piano or Electronic Keyboard with 60 or more keys. -Faber Piano Adventures Lesson Book (Specific level and supplemental materials will be determined after the first class.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessment occurs when pianists play back the musical examples and songs in class. (I will also accept any recordings the pianist makes at home.) I will make notes for each class and post the assignments on the classroom page.
This class is not performance based.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Virtual music making has its limitations and patience and understanding are appreciated.

- Please understand that the Mute Function may be used in the class. Making music live over the internet has a few issues to consider and one of them is the Zoom "noise cancelling" algorithm; it believes music is noise, so it will cancel it out if we all play unmuted. Another issue is the internet lag which makes playing at the same time impossible. Therefore, pianists can be muted while I play musical examples, then we unmute to discuss and ask questions. There will be opportunities for conversation and interaction in every lesson.

Set-up:
- Please set up the computer to have Original Sound Enabled. Check out this link for help doing that:
https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/115003279466-Enabling-option-to-preserve-original-sound

- Please position the computer camera to include part of the piano and student, if possible. This may mean putting the laptop off to the side of the pianist, rather than in front. If this is too cumbersome, it's not the end of the world. Computers, laptops and iPads are ideal, but iPhones can be used.

- Please make sure the pianist has a quiet space to learn in. Because we are using our ears a lot, it can be difficult for pianists to concentrate if there is a lot of background noise or distractions. And when we are unmuted it can be hard to hear the students speak when there is background noise. If this is difficult to do, it is recommended that the pianist wear headphones.

24 Hour Cancellation Policy:
- Regarding missed lessons with less than 24 hours advanced notice: I usually allow one freebie and make-up opportunity for a missed lesson due to a non-emergency situation. After this freebie has been used, all missed or cancelled lessons with less than 24 hours notice will be subject to full payment and if possible a make-up lesson can be scheduled at full payment.

- Regarding rescheduling lessons with advanced notice: You may not need to withdraw from the subscription if you will be missing a lesson due to a conflicting schedule. With enough advanced notice, I am able to delete the date in the schedule and reschedule it. I really appreciate advanced notice for any appointments or vacations that conflict with our on-going schedule and will always try and accommodate when I am able. Thank you for your understanding.
We will be using the Faber Piano Adventures Lesson book and possibly other books in the series.
You do not have to get the book for the first lesson, we will assess level then and decide which book to start with.
