Class Experience
This piano class will be completely personalized to help student arise interest and enjoy playing the piano. Songs choice will be based on students' interests and preferences, from classical to pop music. The methods that will be used varies depending on the student's strength and foundation. Some students learn better by listening, singing, or imitating, some students learn by reading notes, counting beats, analyzing the structures. It all depends on the styles, songs, and the players' ability. We can prepare for auditions, music exams (ABRSM, RCM, Rockschool) or just playing for fun! Foundation skills that will be covered are: 1) notes reading on a score and keyboard 2) understanding beats and rhythm 3) tempo and dynamics 4) phrasing, pattern, and structure 5) listening and decoding skills If students have no idea which piece or style to start with, the classes will follow lesson books or curriculum that is suitable for their ages and ability.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello families, my name is Karen, children usually call me Ms Karen. I have been teaching Math and Music for more than 15 years.
I have a HBSc., double majored in Pure Mathematics and Music from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Science in Actuarial Science. Throughout my teaching experiences, I mastered the skill of teaching the world-renowned Singapore Math and incorporated it into math games to make Math classes as fun as possible!
As an amateur musician, I have been performing and playing in rock and pop bands since high school! I have a classical and pop/rock music background (G10 Piano Royal Conservatory of Music and Professional diploma in Vocal Styles from Berklee).
I also have experience in teaching piano, singing, and music & movement in private settings and music centres.
Some research finds that music can enhance mathematical skills because Music targets one specific area of the brain to stimulate the use of spatial-temporal reasoning, which is useful in mathematics. I hope my knowledge and teaching experiences in both subjects will bring your child the joy of learning and the beauty of the connection between Math and Music.
