Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 5
I will carefully structure each lesson to meet the individual needs of your child, directly teaching the specific skills the child needs to be successful in reading and spelling. I will review skills, as needed, so that the child can gain a solid foundation and understanding of our language. Each lesson will follow the same format, helping the child to feel secure and gain confidence. In each lesson, rules of the English language will be taught and practiced. During the first two sessions, I will informally assess the student's phonemic awareness, reading and spelling. That information will then be used to create a program that is tailored to their specific needs. The program will be multi-sensory, so visual, auditory and kinesthetic approaches will be employed simultaneously throughout each lesson. For example, information will be presented visually and auditorily, but I will also demonstrate and incorporate table writing, arm tapping, sky writing, finger spelling and many interactive modes of learning. I will implement the "I do, we do, you do" teaching method in each lesson. Phonics will be emphasized. Fluency strategies will be included. We will also spend a few minutes each session working on those words that do not follow the typical rules. These are often referred to as "red words," "rule breakers" or "memory words." Note: An Orton-Gillingham lesson carried out with fidelity typically takes closer to 45 minutes. This 25 minute time slot is an opportunity for students who may not have the attention span to attend for long periods of time, or for those who want to get a sense of how the lessons flow and if the lessons are a good fit. Twice per week tutoring is recommended for the best chance of seeing progress.
