Class Experience
Hi, my name is Hannah Howell and I'm a certified K-5 teacher and Orton Gillingham tutor. I can't wait to meet you during our lesson!

In this phonics focused Orton Gillingham lesson I will start by assessing your child on their reading and spelling to find gaps and a good place to start. Once we have a skill to work on I will create a phonological awareness game that will help students listen for the sounds they hear in a word. We will go through a picture card game and sky write several words with that sound. I will then ask the student to write down words with that spelling pattern and give them support at needed. This class in very hands on and student led! Throughout the class I will encourage your child to try their best and hug their mistakes.

Since this is a one on one class students do not need to come to class with any background knowledge or experience. I will meet your child where he or she is at, build on their strengths and help them to grows their reading and writing skills.

Lesson Format
-Assessment
-Phonological Awareness Game
-Introduction of a phonics skill
-Practice reading and writing that sound
-Find that phonics sound within a text
-Read a silly sentence

This class focuses on learning a new phonics skill! I will assess your child and choose a skill to work on or you can let me know of a skill ahead of time. Below you will see the June Orton phonics progression that I will be using during my lesson. Please note that there are many different orders that can be used to teach the same skills.

Example Lesson
If I see that you child is struggling to sound out the sh and th sounds I will focus on digraphs. We will play a digraph listening game and then learn the chant with movements "A digraph is when two letters come together and make a new sound" We will write down words such as ship, shape, shop, thin, this, & with. We will come up with a decodable silly sentence that includes those sounds. "The thin duck went to the shop"

Example Lesson
If I see that your child is spelling the words puff, pull, miss, and buzz incorrectly I will work on the FLSZ spelling rule with them. We will play a FLSZ rule listening game then jump into a FLSZ rule chant. " If you see an F, L, S, Z at the end of a one syllable word, make sure the vowel is short, then double it" Students will then work with me on doubling the ending letter of these FLSZ words. They will then be asked to read and spell FLSZ words. At the end of the lesson we will create a decodable silly sentence with FLSZ words included.

As my mentor, Natalie Felix once said "We will go as fast as we can but as slow as we must" If you have any questions about this class please do not hesitate to reach out to me!

Parent Note
During our first lesson, I will assess your child to see where it will be best for us to start. Once you sign them up for this class please send me a quick message giving me some background information on your child and what kind of skills they are working on. This will save us some time and give me an idea of where to start. Below are some pieces of information to include.

-Does your child attend a public, private, homeschooled, or unschooled setting for their education?
-Can your child name their uppercase letters A-Z
-Can your child name their lowercase letters a-z
-Does your child know their sounds A-Z
-How is your child doing with their short vowel sounds? (A, E, I, O, U)
-Can your child independently write their uppercase letters?
-Can your child independently write their lowercase letters?
-How much time per day is your child working on their reading and writing skills?
-What are some of their favorite read-aloud or independently read books at home?
