In this ongoing reading comprehension class, students will read fiction and nonfiction selections to practice comprehension strategies and skills. In addition to developing strong reading comprehension strategies, students will learn bits about history, science, and other exciting topics through the passages read each week. Literary terms such as plot, setting, metaphors and similes, alliteration, and personification are also taught and explained as they occur in different passages. Students will develop the skills needed to be able to make inferences, and to understand the author’s purpose, genre, vocabulary using context clues, and identify the main idea of a passage.
We will read different passages each week and apply important reading comprehension strategies to strengthen understanding. The reading in this class is done aloud. Students who are uncomfortable reading out loud are not required to do so.Learning Goals

My passion is literature. I believe stories make concepts more palpable to children. Stories teach students valuable lessons, empathy, and to see the world from different perspectives.
When I have time, I like to travel, experience different cultures, and learn the history of people and places. I am also an animal lover! I have two dogs, have worked with animal rescues, and fostered cats and dogs for years.
