Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will:

-develop their grammatical skills by learning and reviewing grammatical rules in English
-develop their spelling skills by spelling age-appropriate spelling words in English
-write strong leads to opinion, informative, and narrative writing prompts
-incorporate transitions between sections and paragraphs
-write strong endings to opinion, informative, and narrative writing prompts
-organize ideas in logical and creative ways
-elaborate upon ideas using evidence and sensory details
-incorporate appropriate punctuation throughout writing samples
All of our teachers hold Bachelor degrees. All of our teachers are proficient with teaching elementary and middle school level writing, grammar, and spelling words. All of our teachers receive training bi-weekly on how to address social and cultural topics. All of our teachers received a 2-hour professional development session on addressing social-emotional learning themes during lessons.
Students will continue to write to finish the writing prompts they began in class. Students will receive a list of spelling words each week to memorize for the following week.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students' work will be assessed using the Writing Pathways Performance Assessments & Learning Progressions rubric to evaluate for leads, transitions, endings, organization, elaboration of ideas, grammar, spelling, and punctuation during every 4 weeks. Teachers will scan or take pictures of the scored rubric, and send the results to the parents via a message.
1 hour 10 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will participate in creative writing prompts to express themselves freely. Also, students will participate in opinion writing prompts to share their opinions on various topics including: fairness, friendships, advocating for social causes (i.e. climate change, equal pay for equal work, etc.). Students will participate in informative writing prompts about various informational topics such as animals, historical figures (civil rights leaders, inventors, etc.).
