Private One-to-One Reading Comprehension + SEL Tutoring (Ages 4-14)
In this ongoing class, learners will receive individualized support with developing their reading comprehension skills to become proficient and confident readers.

Description
Class Experience
Students will: -predict the events that will occur based upon the cover and title of the book before reading -adjust predictions during and after reading -locate textual evidence -summarize the major events/identifying the main idea of the book -analyze the setting and characters -make connections between other books and personal experiences -infer characters' motivations and feelings -critique the writing style of the author(s) -synthesize evidence from more than one text based upon similar themes
All of our teachers hold Bachelor degrees. All of our teachers are proficient with teaching elementary and middle grades reading comprehension skills. All of our teachers receive training bi-weekly on how to improve virtual instruction for students of all learning styles. All of our teachers received a 2-hour professional development session on addressing social-emotional learning and cultural themes during lessons.
Students are expected to read independently or with an older family member for at least 20 minutes every night.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
The students' progress will be assessed informally. The parent/caregiver will receive written feedback in the classroom post or messages about their learner's progress within reading comprehension. Additionally, there will be a comprehension passage assessment given to students during the first and last tutoring sessions to determine how close the learner is to reading at grade/age-level.
1 hour 10 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Students will use one online source for their book selections to ensure that our teachers can monitor what students are reading and provide support if there are any sensitive topics that arise within the learner directed text selected.
