Description

Class Experience

Students may work on improving pieces they are playing for school, preparing for an audition into a new ensemble, learning lots of solo pieces, or any combination of goals. In any scenario, I make sure to develop technique on the instrument, intellectual understanding of music, and intuitive musical expressivity.
Hello! I began playing the cello when I was 5 years old, and the joy of learning music has stayed with me my whole life. As a former philosophy major, I believe music education enhances development of the whole person by nurturing physical, intellectual, and socio-emotional skills. Today, I offer classes on a variety of musical and academic subjects, and I would love to help you along your journey!

As a professional cellist, I maintain an active performing schedule with three professional orchestras. Since 2010, I have taught private music lessons on cello, violin, and piano, coached chamber ensembles, led orchestra sectionals, and taught music theory at the college level. With the experience of the Global Leaders Program, I am a certified Teaching Artist and have developed an interdisciplinary approach to music learning. I aim to cultivate a lifelong enjoyment of music by helping learners of all walks of life unlock their own creativity and exploration.

Highlights of my Performing Career:
- Shared the stage with performers such as Joshua Bell, Ben Folds, 2Cellos, Michael Buble, Jane Lynch, and more
- Current cellist in Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra and South Dakota Symphony Orchestra
- Current Associate Principal Cellist of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra
- Performed at international festivals in Europe, South America, and throughout North America
- Performed a solo concerto with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra and UNL Symphony Orchestra
- Winner of the 2016 "Play with the Chiaras" Competition

Teaching Experience:
- Teaching Assistant in Philosophy, Interdisciplinary Arts, and Music throughout college and graduate school
- Founder of Star City Strings performing and teaching ensemble
- Taught at Intensive Community Program of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra
- Certified Teaching Artist through the Global Leaders Program
- Adjunct Faculty at Southeast Community College
- Chamber Music Coach for Omaha Area Youth Orchestras

My Education:
- Bachelor of Music from Boston University, summa cum laude, 2013
- Master of Music from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2016
- Graduate of the Global Leaders Program, 2020

My Students' Accomplishments:
- Routinely admitted by audition to ensembles such as Youth Ensemble of Strings, Junior Youth Symphony, and Lincoln Youth Symphony
- Earned places in the Nebraska All-State Honors Orchestra
- Went on to major in music at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Carlton College, and others
- Won high school senior solo competitions and performed with orchestras
Lessons are designed to teach new material and provide feedback on a student's playing. It is essential to practice individually outside lesson time, and I expect students to play 4-5 days a week for the length of their lesson. Even if a student learns quickly and remembers easily, so much of playing an instrument is muscle memory that simply needs repetition to take hold. New skills build on the previous ones, so we can only progress to something new once the old material is mastered. While there are no shortcuts, I aim to help students learn how to practice efficiently and enjoy the process!
- An instrument of your own, ideally rented or purchased from your local music store rather than purchased online - Music stand - Pencil - Method books; at your first lesson, we will figure out what would be a good course for you - Quiet place to practice and do your lessons - Cellists: a chair or stool that allows your feet to rest flat on the floor, rosin, and a rockstop/endpin stop/donut if you are on hardwood floors - Pianists: a bench or stool that is the right height (I can help you assess that!) - Violinists: a well-fitting shoulder rest and chin rest
I aim to cultivate a growth mindset rather than a fixed one. Learning an instrument is a life-long journey, and students learn more effectively (and happily) when I emphasize that musical proficiency is a learned process rather than innate or unattainable. While I will encourage students through milestones such as completing a book or performing a concert, I prioritize the process over external standards. In line with the growth mindset, I can provide notes on what to practice, including what skills a student is developing and recommendations for what to work on more.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
