Hello, My name is Steven Collett and I look forward to making music with you. Whether you or your child are a beginner or have a few years under your belt, I can guide you to the next level from the comfort of your own home. I am an experienced singer and multi-instrumentalist on piano, ukulele, guitar, bass, and trumpet. I guess you can say music feeds my soul. I played 5 years in the Hamilton All-Star Jazz Band performing at the IJEA in New York City with Adrean Farrugia and Diana Panton. After graduating from the Applied Music Program, I went on to study Jazz Performance at the University of Toronto studying with Phil Nimmons, Mike Malone, Brian Dickinson, and Kirk MacDonald. I performed on cruise ships for 3 years, playing piano in the Jazz Trio all over North America, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Alaska. I divide my time between teaching Music plus performing Rock, Pop, Jazz & Blues at many venues across the greater Toronto and Hamilton area. Although playing gigs has been paused for the foreseeable future, I continue to enjoy teaching my students through online platforms The first lesson includes introduction to playing piano/keyboard such as how to sit at the piano, finger numbers, piano tones, and the keyboard. We will discuss right hand- and left-hand position, starting with the C position. We will discuss basic theory such as grand staff, time signature, rhythm, and repeat signs. Students will learn 5-finger warm-ups and basic chord structure. There will be an introduction to scales as well as broken and solid chords. I teach through the methods of Faber Piano Adventures and RCM; no books necessary, but sometimes helpful. Students will have an understanding of where middle C is on the piano as well as note recognition. Beginner students will learn how to play nursery rhymes and simple melodies from any beginner sheet music or books. Intermediate students will continue to develop their skills while adapting new methods for improved technique. I like to keep my classes lighthearted. If there are any songs the student wishes to learn, we will have fun learning them. I look forward to making music with your child.

A bit about my background: I performed for five years with the Hamilton All-Star Jazz Band, including at the IJEA in New York City alongside Adrean Farrugia and Diana Panton. After graduating from the Applied Music Program, I went on to study Jazz Performance at the University of Toronto, where I trained under Phil Nimmons, Mike Malone, Brian Dickinson, and Kirk MacDonald.
