Class experience

US Grade 6
Hello! My name is Elizabeth Seney and I have been an educator for the last 23 years. I am incredibly passionate about teaching Secondary Mathematics as well as Integrated, Project-Based homeschool curriculum.

As a young adult, my teaching experiences began with Special Education in Southern California, where I spent two years at the elementary level. I then taught Computers for another 3 years before transitioning to teaching mathematics.

I began teaching math at the middle and high school level in North Carolina, USA. I am able to teach any grade level from 6th grade through high school Calculus. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, a Master's Degree in Secondary Education, and once held a North Carolina Teaching Certificate in Secondary Mathematics.

My professional training has taught me how to differentiate mathematics learning for a variety of learning modalities. I have teaching experience and specialize in working with students of all learning needs including gifted, atypical neurodevelopment, and dyslexia/dysgraphia. I have curricula development training in the fields of Integrated Learning and Project-Based Learning. I am qualified to teach personal projects that integrate every secondary subject including Writing, Literature, Humanities, Science, and a variety of Electives such as pottery, fine art, digital art, videography, and basic technology courses such as web design and basic coding.

After some time in traditional public school settings, I transitioned to teaching secondary mathematics in a Montessori setting at a Montessori Farm School in Ohio. My professional training in this educational field was invaluable as I learned how to use materials and visuals to connect the hand to the mind during mathematics learning.

I have the AMI Secondary Montessori Adolescent Certificate which includes the ability to teach all subject levels at a middle and high school level. The most important part of this experience was my ability to branch out and become a Secondary Generalist.

After 7 years in this setting, I used this variety of training and professional experiences to start my own curriculum writing and consultation business. I traveled around the United States, writing Integrated and Project-Based curricula for new middle schools and helping the administration train their teachers. My most recent professional position, prior to teaching here on Outschool, was as the Writer and Director of a new Middle School here in South Carolina.

During Covid, I transitioned to at-home teaching for the benefit of my own middle school students. I wrote online Project-Based curricula for them, developed digital materials, digital projects, and learned how to use Google Digital applications to teach and collaborate. It's as close to teaching in person as it gets.

On a whim, I chose to list some of my mathematics classes and curricula on Outschool and I fell in love. The platform itself is well managed but more importantly the connections I've been able to make with families, and the teaching I've been able to do is what I consider the best of my entire career. I am able to offer very specific classes that meet the needs of math students in a way I've always dreamed of being able to do! I transitioned to fully teaching on Outschool and have reaped the joy and connections with families over the last two years.

I believe the sum of these varied experiences has made me the teacher I am today. I view secondary students as the whole child, rather than recipients of a specialized subject. I approach each of my students as individuals, respecting and adapting to their learning needs and personal passions. I'm incredibly passionate about my mathematics teaching but also about my homeschool consulting and Project-Based instruction. Please make sure to ask me about both!

I hope to see you in class!
Homework Offered
For this class, homework is entirely optional. If your learner would like to complete full courses, I recommend daily homework between our sessions. If your learner is using this course as a supplement or a way to fill in gaps, then homework can be on an as-needed basis or not at all.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
At the end of the session, you will receive a full progress report that lists where your Learner is in the curriculum, their strengths, their struggles, and any suggestions for improvement areas. On a class meeting basis, students are individually assessed to determine their understanding. These regular assessments inform whether a student should move on, skip material, or be given extra practice material. They also inform the instructional method that will be used. Additionally, I have quizzes, unit assessments, and end-of-grade exams that can be used on request. I can provide report cards or letters of recommendation and I love helping homeschool families meet state requirements.
Grades Offered
Need:

Pencil and Eraser
Paper

Nice to Have:

Ruler
Graph Paper
Calculator
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Since we use Google Slides, a Google Account is required but is free to obtain. Students can be guided to get their own but a parent or guardian can use their Google Account if it is preferred.
We use Google Slides in order to assign work and live collaborate during class. A Google account is required and is free. Students can use any Google account either of their own or of a parent or guardian. Through Outschool, I will send a Google Slides document that contains all their work, notes, and homework.

We also use the Zoom Whiteboard extensively for lessons. The only device that does not allow students to annotate on the Zoom Whiteboard is a Chromebook. I recommend that your student not use a Chromebook if possible. I also recommend avoiding cell phones to log in as they are very difficult to navigate the Whiteboard and Google Classroom (though not impossible! especially for tech-savvy kids).
