15 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This one time class is ideal as a taster session if your child has shown an interest in learning to play the piano. Your child will need access to a piano or keyboard for the duration of the lesson but no piano books will be needed. I will begin the lesson by talking about the correct sitting position at the piano and hand position. The learner will have time to explore the different sounds on the piano, such as low and high, loud and soft as well as learning the correct musical terms for these. The learner will then be introduced to the most important note on the piano: Middle C. They will practice finding it and playing it with their right and left hand, as well as learning how to read it on the stave. This will lead onto playing their first 4 pieces using just middle C, through which they will learn about crotchets and minims. The final piece will be a duet with me. If time allows (as we will take each lesson at the learner's pace), we will move onto learning the first 5 notes on the right hand: C D E F G. If your child enjoys this class and wishes to continue, then there are different options available. You can simply request to book this One-Time Class whenever you have time in your schedule and we will continue each lesson where we left off or you can request an individual, Ongoing Class to fix a regular time each week that suits you. We will progress using the John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course Part 1 which you will be required to purchase for practice at home after the first few lessons. Topics covered will include:- * Scales and arpeggios * Basic rhythms (quarter, half and whole notes) * Treble and bass clef notes * Sight reading * Ear training * Rests A typical lesson will begin with a warm up of practicing scales and note identification. We will then review the pieces practiced over the last week and introduce new concepts or pieces. Finally the lesson will end with sight reading and ear training games.
Learning Goals
In the first lesson, the learner will know how to sit at the piano correctly and how to place their hands. They will be introduced to some basic musical terminology and will explore the piano. They will be able to locate Middle C and identify it on both staves. The learner will be able to play 4 very basic piano pieces. Some learners will move onto learning notes C D E F G on the right hand.
The learning goals will be individually tailored to the learner if they continue with lessons.
Other Details
Supply List
The learner will need access to a piano or keyboard for the duration of the lesson. It would be useful if the computer camera is set up so that I can see the learner and their fingers on the piano so sometimes a side angle is the best! If they decide to continue with individual piano lessons then they will need to purchase a specified piano book for practice at home.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Helen and I am a qualified primary school teacher based in the UK. I have 2 small children so am taking a break from a full time teaching job after a 15 year career in British schools.
After graduating from Oxford University with a BA degree, I then went on to achieve an MA degree in Primary Education. I have a particular interest in Early Years, Maths, English, History, Geography, Science and the 11 Plus Exam.
I believe that learning can be great fun and is the key to opening many doors for children. I am particularly passionate about good phonics teaching for young children and creating a love of learning that will carry them through life. Over the last 2 years I have spent many hours tutoring children who have fallen behind due to Covid19, mainly in maths and English. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing these children make such amazing progress and would like to continue to do this through Outschool. I also enjoy helping children to achieve their full potential in passing the UK 11+ Exam and have seen many of my pupils go on to enjoy a place in Grammar School.
