During our drum lessons, our ultimate goal is always to get you playing your favourite music! We will focus on learning grooves, beats, fills, notation, reading, technique, and of course, songs! We will always explore the style of music you love the most, as well as listen to a number of different genres, all of which will feed into your drumming journey. In addition to learning songs you love, you'll learn how to read music! Here is what we will explore during the lessons: 1. Grooves and beats. We will read through several different types of grooves - playing eighth notes, quarter notes, and sixteenth notes. We will read the rhythms and count them out loud. We will move them around the kit and get different sounds out of these grooves. 2. Fills. We will play different rhythms around the toms and cymbals, to get away from the groove centre of the base drum, hi hat, and snare drum. We will then combine grooves and fills, as is so often the case in songs. We will play sequences of grooves followed by a fill, and return to grooves as well. 3. Songs. We will pick your favourite song, listen through to the drum part, and start to figure it out together! We will also analyze song form. For example, how long a certain part goes for, before switching to the next part (ie. an intro, going to a verse, going to a pre-chorus, going to a chorus, going back to a verse and repeating, going to a bridge, going to a final chorus, and going to an outro). Through charting out the parts, we will begin to stitch them together and play them along with the recording! All that's required for these lessons is your own drum kit, either acoustic or electronic, drumsticks, a computer/tablet for the Zoom call, and access to our classroom page during the week so that you can practice the ideas and concepts.
