This class is for French horn players to receive individualized instruction based on their previous musical experience(or lack thereof). Perfect for students looking to pick up the French horn for the first time, prepare for a performance, or just move up to the next level! Beginners will learn: • Care and maintenance • Names of the parts of the horn • Posture and playing technique • How to read music and basic music theory • Playing music, and playing musically! Intermediate-Advanced players can get help with the following: • Learning new music • General musicianship • Technique • Troubleshooting issues If you can't find a class time that works for you, feel free to request one that does!

Supply List
In addition to a French horn*, students must have the following materials: Mouthpiece Valve/rotor oil Pencil Music, method books, and other materials. See below: Beginners will need a method book to start out. The method book we use in this class is "Recipe for Success: A Balanced Curriculum for Young Horn Players, by Karen Houghton and Janet B. Nye, available from www.houghtonhorns.com. If this book is not available where you are, contact the teacher to discuss alternatives. Intermediate and advanced players will need music and other materials, as determined based on individual needs. Teacher will discuss necessary materials with students after the first lesson. *If you need help finding a suitable instrument, inquire at your nearest music store or feel free to get in touch with any questions or concerns.

As an active performer in Houston and Albuquerque, Joel Livsey has had recurring playing experience with ensembles including the Brazosport Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, Santa Fe Symphony, and Opera Southwest. Joel’s chamber music experience includes performances with Ranchitos Brass, performing at the 2018 International Horn Symposium with the Duke City Horns, and premiering Ryan Chase's “Sur la Choisy” at the 2017 Southwest Horn Workshop with the UNM Horn Choir. He has also recorded for bands in the Albuquerque area and performed live with local bands including Cactus Tractor.
Joel has built and maintained a private horn studio for over 10 years. His students have ranged in experience from beginner to collegiate. He has also held masterclasses and has served as a clinician for various schools in the east Texas, Houston, and New Mexico areas. Being a well-known educator in the area, Joel has served as a recurring judge for the Albuquerque Solo and Ensemble Festival.
