Homework
2-4 hours per week. To progress as a musician, the student will need to practice playing their flute outside of class. The student will receive written and/or video feedback after each lesson, with assignments and suggestions to improve their playing. The practice time necessary will vary depending on the student's age and playing level. Practice will be more effective if spaced throughout the week (you can't "cram" for a music lesson).

Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Let's work on your flute playing! This class is a ongoing, weekly private lesson for flutists at any level. Lessons will focus on the musician's individual needs:

Flute Basics - hand & body position, embouchure, breathing.
Tone - a good flute sound! This is the first thing we hear, and is very important to your flute playing.
Technique - scales, thirds, arpeggios, etc. These are the "building blocks" of music.
Exercises & Etudes - short exercises to build skills of reading and musicianship.
Literature - longer solo works for flute, excerpts from orchestral literature, duets, and fun songs.
Musicianship Skills - expression, phrasing, dynamics, rhythm, vibrato, tuning.

In the first lesson, we will talk about the student's playing history and plans. Regular weekly lessons will help guide the young musician as they learn to play the flute. For the more advanced flutist, lessons will help build skills needed to become a confident, independent musician. We will work on building good habits, fluency in music reading skills, and efficient playing technique. We work to build skill, but also remember that music is a passion! It is communication, and involves emotion and expression. I want to hear this in my student's playing, and to see them enjoy what they are doing.

If you don't see a section that will work for your schedule, please contact me to arrange a time.
