Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Tutoring sessions will focus on a learner's specific English needs. Learners are encouraged to come to the tutoring session with assignments that they have been working on in which they need additional assistance and have questions. If learners do not have a specific assignment, the teacher will provide sentence, paragraph, and pre-writing activities as necessary to aid learners in understanding and mastering concepts.

Areas of focus will include understanding and identifying subjects and verbs, punctuating sentences correctly, and identifying and using a variety of sentence structures.

Our session time will involve working together on homework assignments and in-class practice activities. Additional instruction and practice will be given as necessary in order for learners to feel confident with understanding the material and to demonstrate that they are fully grasping concepts. The teacher will guide the learner in identifying problem areas and encourage the use of appropriate strategies and patterns so that the learner can begin to to self-correct and self-edit his/her own work. The learner will also be encouraged with what he/she is doing well to solidify good habits and build confidence.

Learners must be willing to share their assignments, speak up, and ask questions. Tutoring provides a low-stress, positive environment, where the learner will be encouraged to try, try, and try again. This type of environment is often ideal for middle schoolers who may be struggling in a classroom setting, who may need the extra accountability to complete their homework assignments, or who may benefit greatly from a one-on-one interaction situation in order to stay focused.

**If you are currently enrolled in one of my middle school English classes (Improving Sentence Writing, Creating the Paragraph, or Achieving Writing Success for Middle Schoolers: Semester Course), you may be eligible for a discount for tutoring. Please message me for details.**

I teach English writing, grammar, and test prep; English as a second/foreign language; poetry; and introductory Brazilian Portuguese classes. I have a B.A. in Secondary English Education and an M.A. in Missions and Intercultural Studies along with a graduate-level certificate in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language. With over 25 years of experience working with children, youth, and adults to help them achieve improved communicative and comprehension skills, I believe that everyone can learn and improve and that each person is uniquely wired to learn. It is my privilege to come alongside and to help, engage, challenge, and motivate all learners to be their best and do their best.

Personally, I enjoy reading, writing, spending time in God's Word, and hanging out with my family. We love hosting Brazilian-style cook-outs at our home and entertaining guests locally and from around the world.
