US Grade Kindergarten - 4
I'm an elementary school reading specialist with 25 years experience and will provide 1-on-1 reading & writing tutoring for your elementary school student. Many students may not get the individualized attention that can help their reading & writing improve as quickly as possible when working in a full class or even in a small group. Over 8 weeks, I will meet with your child once a week for 30 minutes each time. My approach is friendly, yet focused. I will individualize the sessions for your child's needs, focusing on what they can do and helping them to the next steps. I will work on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and/or fluency as needed. Reading strategies that may be taught include rereading, checking the pictures, sounding it out, and taking words apart. Because these are 1-on-1 sessions, these parts will be individualized as needed. I'll use a mix of Google Slides, video clips, games and books throughout the course. I will also choose books and topics based on your child's interests. These sessions can be for students who may need extra help, or for students who just need some reinforcement. Sessions can include homework if the parent requests that. I look forward to working with your child!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I've been a public school elementary reading specialist near Buffalo, NY for 26 years and I just love it! I have a BA in Elementary Education from SUNY Geneseo and a MA in Reading, Language Arts and Literature from The Ohio State University. I also recently obtained an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology and New Literacies. I'm a lifelong learner!
Over the course of my career, I've taught Reading Recovery for 11 years and have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham method. I'm currently working on getting accredited at the Associate level of Orton-Gillingham teaching. My teaching approach is specific, efficient and fun! On Outschool, I tutor elementary school students in reading & writing, teach small group reading sessions and run elementary book clubs to discuss fantastic books. I'm an avid reader (I have a yearly goal of reading 100 books) and I love to give other avid elementary readers a vehicle to share their love for books as well. I enjoy musicals, organizing and spending time with my big, bustling, blended family.
I look forward to meeting your learner!
Take care! Christie Welsby :)
