In this course, students will learn about the history around them while practicing their conversational English. They will also review foundational reading skills such as phonics, fluency, and reading comprehension learning objectives.

Class Experience
The Virginia ELA standards that we will cover in this ten-week class include (but not limited to): R.3.4 The student will expand vocabulary when reading. R.3.5 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts, literary nonfiction, and poetry. R.3.6 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction texts. R.4.4 The student will expand vocabulary when reading. R.4.5 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts, literary nonfiction texts, and poetry. R.4.6.g Distinguish between fact and opinion. R.4.6.EKSP.4 draw conclusions and make inferences using information from the text R.5.5.a Summarize plot events using details from the text. 1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
While we explore the biographies of some of our Latinx heroes, certain topics such as racism, discrimination, or segregation may be mentioned.
