Class Experience

Students will learn how to play the violin by learning correct posture, hand positioning, fingering techniques, bowing techniques, reading music, ear training, and rhythm.
I have been playing the violin for over 10 years and have been teaching private lessons on and off for the past 5 years. I have had the privilege of studying with 3 amazing professional violinists, each of whom were professional performers and teachers. In addition, I have taken several University level music classes including music theory, violin pedagogy, string literature, various ensembles, and more. I love to teach music!
Students are encouraged to practice once a day every day between our weekly meetings. The amount of time for each practice session should be determined by the student. Usually practicing what we covered in class 3-5 times every day is a great place to start. Keep in mind that the goal of practicing is not simply to impress the teacher or to be able to move on to new material in the next lesson, but it is to retain the skills and information you learn in class for a lifetime.
We will be using multiple violin method books that the student will need to purchase. The book I prefer to start with is called "Essential Elements for Strings, Violin Book 1". This can be found on Amazon or through any music store for around $10.

There are many free apps for tuning the violin. Anything that has a microphone and can tell the student what note they are playing will be great! My favorite app is called "Soundcorset tuner & metronome".

It will also be a benefit to the student to purchase fingerboard stickers if they don't already have them. Violins have no frets! Can you believe it? These stickers will help in memorizing where to put left hand fingers. There are many great options for violin fingerboard stickers. Amazon has a few that are awesome which I have linked below. I can help to put these stickers on during our lesson.

Option 1:

Option 2*:
*Note: Be sure to double check that the sticker is for your size of violin. This link is to a 4/4 size sticker.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learner progress is assessed through informal assessments. At the beginning of each class, students will simply show me what they practiced the week before. We will then address questions or concerns if there are any, and move on to new material when the student is ready.
25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
