Mastery Evaluation
2-4 hours per week. Traditionally, music students are expected to practice their instrument for at least 30 minutes daily. This practice can include sheet music learning, scales, or other technical exercises.
Assessment
Learning to play the cello or any musical instrument is a life-long journey. Continued improvement is emphasized over meeting certain skill benchmarks at specific moments during the learning process.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner Level
In this live class, students meet with me weekly for lessons tailored to their specific needs as developing musicians. The material covered in this course focuses on teaching and enhancing beginner-level music skills and cello techniques. Specific areas of instruction include the anatomy of the cello, proper playing posture and bow hold, instrument care, rudimentary music reading, rhythm and counting, and more. My goal as an educator is not only to develop the necessary technical skills for cellists but also to instill passion, dedication, and self-worth into each student. My approach to teaching will be to treat each student as an individual and guide them in a caring, considerate, and patient manner.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the anatomy of the cello from the top of the scroll to the bottom of the end-pin.
By the end of the first month, students will know the musical alphabet and be able to locate the notes on the bass clef staff.

Pre-Requisites
Enrollment in a scholastic music ensemble is highly encouraged but not required.
Supply List
Students are required to have a cello. This instrument can be borrowed from a school's orchestra program, rented from an accredited music store, or bought. It is important to know as a parent that cellos are very expensive, so I recommend borrowing one from a school system or renting one from a music store. The average rental price for a student cello ranges from $30-$55 a month, depending on the location of the store and the quality of the instrument. Some stores even offer rent-to-own programs for cellos. Additional materials students will need are rosin and a rock stop. Basic bow rosins are priced from $3-$8, and rock stops range from $8-$20. Instrument tuners and metronomes are not required because there are a plethora of excellent online resources that provide these tools for free.

Sources
The book "Essential Elements for Strings: Cello Book 1" is required for this course. As this is a published, copyrighted work, it is not available for free and must be purchased. The initial lessons will be taught from this book. Additional sheet music used during the lessons is legally sourced from the International Music Sheet Library for the Public. The URL for this website will be given to students as needed.
