One on one viola lessons for all skill levels with a professional symphony musician!

Class experience

The point of this class is to introduce students to the viola in a fun and engaging environment! Together we will develop and support your love for music and ability to focus and creatively problem solve. We will use the Suzuki Viola School as the basis for our lessons, learning such songs as Twinkle Little Star, Lightly Row and Minuet 1 amongst others. Students will be encouraged to use their natural creativity to facilitate their learning, and to exhibit what they have learned through performance of simple songs for family and friends. I also welcome students to learn songs that they like from other genres such as film scores, pop or rock songs. For example, a student of mine recently learned "My Heart will go on" from the Titanic. The learning goals will vary depending on the age of the student, but the general learning objectives will remain the same- to gain an appreciation for music and conquer your musical goals week after week. As a teacher I have experience working with children as young as 5, all the way to adulthood. All ages and learning levels are welcome and encouraged to join!

Some specific topics we will cover will be:
-switching from violin to viola
-ear training (melody, rhythm)
-listening (getting to know classical music repertoire)
-the roles of the right and left hands
-playing position and proper posture
-musical expression and dynamics
-how to tune your own viola
-how to practice effectively

I look forward to meeting you!
I hold a Masters degree in violin and viola performance from the University of Ottawa, Canada. I have played with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, National Academy Orchestra and held the position of Principal viola with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. I have been teaching privately for over 10 years.
Homework Offered
Homework will consist of individual practice at home throughout the week with the help of a parent, caregiver, or older sibling if necessary. For beginners I recommend a minimum of 20 minutes of violin practice per day. For intermediate-advanced students 30 minutes- 1 hour per day is recommended.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learner process is assessed by observing their engagement in the class, and their progress on the instrument. There is no official letter grades assigned. Instead I will offer consistent and ongoing feedback to the student that is helpful, supportive and practical. Students are encouraged to write notes and set practice goals for the week. Parents will be kept up to date on the progress of the lessons, and sent any materials necessary for the student's practice that week.
Grades Offered
Suzuki Viola School Book
-A notebook that the learner likes writing in
-Pencil with eraser
-viola with supplies (bow, case, rosin, tuner)
