Homework
1 hour per week. Students will be given practice assignments each week, and will be encouraged to practice regularly according to their skill level. Students will also be given music theory and/or composition exercises to be completed during the week, designed to take no more than 10-15 min per assignment, unless of course the student is enjoying the assignment so much that they wish to continue!Assessment
Informal verbal feedback in person during the lesson.Class Experience
In this ongoing course students will learn songs both by ear and using notation, as well as play games and complete written exercises to strengthen their knowledge of the piano and piano music. This course is designed for students who have already been studying piano for some time; therefore learners may start by playing from sheet music already purchased. However at some point all learners will be required to purchase lesson and theory books based on their age and skill level, mostly likely from Piano Adventures or similar series; supplemental public domain materials will be provided as well. Students will need their own instrument at home, which can be either a piano or keyboard with at least 60 keys. Some examples of topics we may cover, depending on the learner's experience: - Major, minor and modal scales and arpeggios - chord theory, and playing chords and inversions on the piano - common chord progressions, how to play them on the piano, and how to write and/or improvise melodies that harmonize with those chords - musical forms, such as rondo and sonata, and how to play and analyze those forms I am a Kodaly-certified teacher with over 17 years of experience teaching piano, and all curriculum that I have designed for lessons I will provide in digital copy at no cost to you. My philosophy is that learning is best when it’s fun, so in addition to skills, I also include interactive games as often as possible, and I enjoy creating opportunities for imaginative improvisation and musical play.

I am a certified teacher with a Master's Degree in Music Education. I have completed all three levels of Kodaly music education training, which means that I specialize in creating sequential curriculum using folk and art music. My undergraduate degree was also in Music Education, and my major instrument was piano.
I love to teach, especially preschool group classes, piano and ukulele lessons, and anything that includes joyful music making. My favorite classroom moments are when students light up with the realization of how much they really can do. It is my hope to bring that moment of confidence to each student, so they may become lifelong learners.
When I am not teaching, I am usually crocheting, reading a fantasy book, or dancing around the living room with my family.
