Welcome to our spelling class. Orton-Gillingham method! Orton–Gillingham is a structured literacy approach. It introduced the idea of breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time. The teaching of new concepts incorporates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways. With this approach, students learn language by ear (listening), mouth (speaking), eyes (seeing), and hand (writing). Orton-Gillingham takes the overall reading, writing and spelling concepts and breaks them down into smaller segments through use of repeated practice, sequencing and systematic approach that allows children to better master phonic skills associated with simple letters/letter sounds into more complex phonic skills. This is a private one-on-one class for learners who need a more targeted and personalized approach to their learning. This class is taught by a professionally trained Orton-Gillingham teacher. Each lesson will include sounds cards, phonemic awareness activities, word lists, visual memory exercises, sight word exercises, decodable stories, and extra phonics activities. Here is a list of possible topics covered during class: Short a Short i Short o Short l Short E Digraph sh Digraph ch Digraph th Digraph ck Digraph wh Floss words am an all Suffix -s nk and ng words beginning blends ending blends blends on both ends -ck & -tch suffixes -ed & -ing silent e CVE silent e reinforcement 2 syllable words W before a and o Words with s and es Closed syllable Exceptions Words with K CK and C Prefixes and suffixes Y as a vowel Open syllable in 2 syllable words R controlled (ar) R controlled (or) R controlled (er, ir, ur) AI & AY ee, ea, ey oi & oy a, oeo, ow 2 sounds of oo 111 Rule -ou & ow oo, ou, ew, ue -au & aw Final stable syllable C+le Drop e Schwa Y TO I tion & sion
