Humans have been inventing since ancient times. Some inventions were before their time, some were small, and some changed the world. We will learn about five inventors whose inventions changed the world. We will learn about the lives of inventors, and the history of the times they lived in. Annette the Teacher has been teaching for a very long time. She has over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. She has a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. She has homeschooled her own children from Pre-School through (their current) High School. All of her classes are interactive. Annette encourages students to fully participate in class. All of her classes feature hands-on activities and books Annette writes for the class herself. Annette is a published writer, publisher, and artist. She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. She enjoys teaching science, history, art, and cooking classes. She brings history alive with her "Life in ..." history classes where students learn about key times in history by experiencing children and families' lives in that time period. "Paint like ..." art classes where students will learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. Kid Cuisine classes are cooking classes for Young Chefs based on historic foods and science topics. Students should be prepared to make, explore, and create during class. Annette knows hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn. Annette has completed Continuing Education Certification with OER's Big History and World History Projects and the NMNA's Foundation for Teaching and Learning about Native Americans. She completed her Best Start in Life: Early Childhood Development certificate. She is currently working on certifications for working with special needs children and early education.TEFL certification. Annette also has experience working with Special Needs children. She is Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs. She also has worked with children with ADHD. 1 file available upon enrollmentWeek 1: Helicopter Template printed from the class page, safety scissors, clear or masking tape Week 2: Several pieces of cardboard (about 4 x 6 inches), white paper cut in half, 3 Styrofoam plates or bowls, safety scissors, acrylic or Tempera paint (NOT watercolors), paintbrushes, white glue (NOT a glue stick or hot glue) Week 3: Empty Toilet Paper Tube, two disposable straws (paper or plastic - NOT straws from sippy cups, etc. We will be cutting the straws into pieces), 2 ROUND coffee stirrers OR 2 thin ROUND wood skewers OR 2 six-inch-long 1/8th inch dowel rods, 1 four-inch by ten-inch piece of THIN cardboard (Thin cardboard = food boxes, frozen meal boxes, cereal boxes, etc.), safety scissors, masking tape, wheel template printed from the class page Week 4: 2 plastic OR paper OR Styrofoam cups, a sewing needle or pin, 2 wooden toothpicks, a piece of string at least 8 feet long, tape Week 5: 3 Empty Toilet Paper tubes, safety scissors, white glue, tape, THIN cardboard piece (4 x 6)(Thin cardboard = food boxes, frozen meal boxes, cereal boxes, etc.), plastic or paper disposable straw, clay or playdough Notes: Please note: The projects are designed for this age group. The projects on Week 3 and 5 are a bit harder than the others. We will be using scissors and a sewing needle or pin. You are the best judge of your student. If you believe they will need assistance, please have an adult nearby.
This class is part of the Primus Science (TM) Complete Science Course Curriculum. All Primus Science classes include interactive, online live classes on Outschool with daily hands-on labs & projects, plus optional worksheets and quizzes. Other classes in the Primus Science Physical Science Curriculum include Chemistry and Physics. Primus Science also has Life Science and Earth Science classes for your complete science curriculum needs.
50 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
We will be building projects during this class. We will be using scissors and a pin or sewing needle. We will be cutting paper, cardboard, toilet paper tubes, and straws. If your student needs assistance using these tools, please have an adult nearby to assist. Playdough or clay may contain wheat or other allergens. Check the packaging for allergy information. Educational science videos are used during this class. Some of these may be from YouTube.
