Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Learn all about the weather in this course. We will study the atmosphere. We will learn how weather works around the world and how geography affects our weather. We will explore the water cycle and precipitation. We will learn about barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind. We will make weather observations and chart our local weather during the course. We will explore extreme weather including hurricanes, cyclones, thunderstorms, and tornados.

We will complete projects including making a thermometer, a windsock, a barometer, and a rain gauge.  Please make sure you have the supplies listed below for the daily project. 

This class is part of the Primus Science (TM) Complete Science Course Curriculum. Day 1: Introduction to Weather and the Atmosphere / We will make a Weather Journal
Day 2: The Water Cycle and Precipitation/ Make a Rain Gauge
Day 3: Air Pressure and Fronts / We will make a Barometer 
Day 4: Wind and Clouds / We will make a Wind Sock
Day 5: Extreme Weather/ We will do a Condensation Experiment

Supplies for the Daily Projects. 
- Please have the supplies ready prior to the class. The student will not be able to complete the Daily Project without the supplies.
- *Please view the video on the class page (available after you have registered for the class) for instructions on how to prep the supplies for Days 2,3, & 4.

Day 1: Two pieces of construction paper and items to decorate a journal (markers, paints, crayons, cotton balls, etc.) and 10 copies of the Weather Journal Printout, stapler or string
Day 2: One 2-liter soda bottle with the top five inches cut off*. We will need BOTH parts of the cut bottle. (Please have an adult cut the bottle for you and have it ready for the class. We will NOT be cutting the bottle during the class.) Marbles or stones, Permanent Marker, Duck Tape or Clear Packing Tape, 2 cups of water, and a  Ruler.
Day 3: Glass jar or open can (please make sure to sand off the sharp edges*), a large round balloon ( the balloon will be cut and have to fit over the top of the jar or can), rubber bands (that fit over the jar opening), tape, a disposable straw, a piece of cardboard 10 x 14 inches, & a marker
Day 4: Plastic sour cream, large yogurt, or takeaway food container (please cut off a two-inch solid ring from the top of the container)*  a plastic grocery bag, clear packing tape or masking tape, pencil, and string.
Day 5: Glass jar, plate to put on top of the glass jar, 1 cup of HOT water (have the water ready halfway through the class), ice cubes or a frozen ice pack

Parental Guidance
We will be using scissors during some of our projects. Please have an adult nearby to assist if necessary. An adult will have to pre-cut a plastic bottle for day 2, a container for day 3, and a can for day 4. Please see the video on the class page for instructions. Educational science videos are used during this class. Some of these may be from YouTube.

Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Minors: Biology, Chemistry, and Writing
Annette the Teacher has been teaching for a very long time. She has over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. She has a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. She has homeschooled her own children from Pre-School through (their current) High School. All of her classes are interactive. Annette encourages students to fully participate in class. All of her classes feature hands-on activities and books Annette writes for the class herself.

Annette is a published writer, publisher, and artist. She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. She enjoys teaching science, history, art, and cooking classes. She brings history alive with her "Life in ..." history classes where students learn about key times in history by experiencing children and families' lives in that time period. "Paint like ..." art classes where students will learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. Kid Cuisine classes are cooking classes for Young Chefs based on historic foods and science topics. Students should be prepared to make, explore, and create during class. Annette knows hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.

Annette also has experience working with Special Needs children. She is Mom to a child on the autism spectrum and a child with serious medical needs. She also has worked with children with ADHD. If your child has special needs, please contact Annette so she can work with you and your child.
