Class Experience

This live class will be taught utilizing the "I Do, We Do, You Do" method - teacher will teach content, students and teacher will practice together, and students will practice on their own to demonstrate understanding. Each class will be 30 minutes: 10-15 minutes of teaching, 5-10 practice, followed by independent activity for understanding.

During this course, students will learning the following:
Session 1:
Students will learn how to locate the front cover, title page, and use it predict what the book will be about.
Teacher direct instruction demonstrating the front cover of a text, title page, and creating a prediction. Students will have an opportunity to practice and apply this to a book they have with them. Share predictions.

Session 2:
Students will learn to identify the author and illustrator of a book and understand their roles.
Teacher direct instruction on identifying the author and illustrator of a read-aloud book and their roles by modeling with an example text. Students will replicate this practice on their own text and share out. Discuss authors and illustrators.
Session 3:
Students will then identify places in a book that they want to talk about with others. This work will encourage readers to THINK and TALK about what they find important or interesting in a text.
Teacher will model during instruction using the same read aloud text and chart from previous session(s). Students will practice identifying parts of their book they want to talk about with others. Students will mark places they might: wonder about a character, have a question about the story or characters, notice something interesting or surprising, and/or reminds you of something. Students will share out at end of lesson - this encourages students to process text, think about the text, and ultimately comprehend the text.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am offering this class because students need to know these parts of a book. They truly help a child understand the text and make predictions about what they are going to read about. Once they are reading, it helps students to stop and think along the way about possible parts they find interesting or have questions about. This type of work seems so basic but is so crucial for reading development! As a literacy coach, I find these minilessons to be so effective for ALL readers.
