US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner - Advanced Level
Come join this interactive, fun class to brush up on your reading and writing skills to help get prepared for sixth grade! Class Content: Each week we will meet to review fifth grade skills. During class we will use a variety of methods and learning styles including hands-on projects, paper assignments, sorts, visuals, books, and other activities to help all learners engage and make the most of this class and reinforce skills and help prepare for sixth grade. We will play games, complete projects and work on listening skills. Why This Class: I have been a brick and mortar teacher for ten years working with all elementary levels. I have seen through experience that summer is a critical time to keep those skills sharp and prevent the summer slide which can set a learner back up to two months in their education. Class Materials: Each week learners will be sent all print outs prior to class. These print outs will include a variety of activities for class including a book that all learners can print and keep. Learners will also need basic supplies available for class. These will include pencils, coloring materials, scissors, and glue. Special Considerations: Class dynamics may adjust time requirements up to 5 minutes. Tech usage: During class we may play online games utilizing kahoot. Please ensure you’re student either knows how to split their screen or is fine with pairing up with someone or with me depending on class dynamics. Class Schedule: Each day we will start with cursive handwriting practice as bell work for the first 5-10 minutes of class. Day 1: Word Study Day 2: Reading Skills and Comprehension Activities (books will come from the website reading a-z) Day 3: Grammar and Writing Skills (Day 3 I will introduce and we will practice the grammar skill. For the writing portion I will do a quick explanation of key words, requirements, etc then learners will have time to plan, write, and edit depending on the week. This day will be more learner driven and I will be available for questions). Week 1/Week of 6/2: Prefixes Fiction-Quoting from text, inferences Conjunctions, propositions, interjections Writing: Narrative writing planning and first draft Week 2/Week of 6/9: Suffixes Nonfiction-Quoting from text, inferences Verbs-tenses Writing: Narrative writing editing and final draft Week 3/Week of 6/16: Prefixes Fiction-Theme, summarizing, text structure Commas Writing: Opinion writing-what you need Week 4/Week of 6/23: Suffixes Nonfiction- Main idea, key details, summarizing Capitalization Writing: Opinion writing-planning and first draft No class week of 6/30 Week 5/Week of 7/7: Roots Fiction-Point of view Figurative Language-similes, metaphors, etc Writing: Opinion writing-editing and final draft Week 6/Week of 7/14: Greek and Latin roots Nonfiction- Point of view Synonyms, Antonyms Writing: Informative/explanatory writing-what you need Week 7/Week of 7/21: Greek roots Fiction- Compare and contrast similar themes or topics Editing practice Writing: Informative/explanatory writing-planning and first draft Week 8/Week of 7/28: Greek and Latin Roots Nonfiction- Compare and contrast structure Adages, idioms, proverbs Writing: Informative/explanatory writing-editing and final draft **Taught throughout course: context clues, parts of literature, illustrations, text/graphic features, theme, plot, characters and setting, poetry
