Class Experience

This class will be designed to support the skills early learners need to be successful readers and writers. I am keeping the enrollment to 6 students, so as to give each student as much individual attention as possible while still encouraging conversation and collaboration. Topics covered in each class:
--Phonological Awareness (all skills are based on listening only, no print is involved: matching beginning sounds to pictures (bee =
the /b/ sound) counting the number of sounds in words, counting the number of words in sentences, segmenting words, deleting
and substituting sounds and syllables in words )
--Phonics (letter and sound correspondence, matching sounds and letters, blending sounds into words, reading words)
--Reading: Reading words in isolation and in short texts
--Writing: Using sounds to write words, learning spelling patterns
--Putting it all together - writing in response to reading - having fun with words!
My classes are structured to be fun and engaging, a safe place to learn and try new things. There is a lot of interaction and I want everyone to be engaged in my classes. Students are encouraged to share ideas or questions freely. I strive to communicate with both students and parents after class, and am available to answer questions between class sessions.

Learning Goals

The goals of this class are to strengthen the skills students need to be successful readers and writers. These skills include being able to hear and repeat sounds, match letters and sounds, and read and write individual letters and words. Students will practice using these skills to read short texts, write dictated words, and write engaging sentences.
