Class Experience

The goals of this class are to strengthen the skills students need to be successful readers and writers. These skills include being able to hear and repeat sounds, match letters and sounds, and read and write individual letters and words. Students will practice using these skills to read short texts, write dictated words, and write engaging sentences.
I am a 24 year veteran teacher, specializing in reading and writing. I am certified as a Reading Specialist grades K-12 and as a Reading teacher grades K-6. During the past 14 years, I have collaborated with teachers to assist them in planning and teaching small group reading in their classrooms. I also work with struggling readers in small intervention reading and writing groups. I am trained in the Science of Reading and in teaching of early reading skills.
No specific homework is assigned, but students will benefit from practicing reading/writing at home with parents.
Students will need access to a pencil and paper, or a white board and marker for class. This is very important part of the learning.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Informal reporting to parents of progress. Any concerns parents have can be addressed through conversation and/or adding a specific support to our class. I will provide a practice text for students after class, which parents can choose to use if it fits in their schedule.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
