Class Experience

Students will learn all kinds of spider facts. They will the ancient history of spiders and the different body parts of spiders as well as their functions. Students will also learn the different types of webs that different types of spiders make as well as why spiders make webs in the first place.

The book describes the ancient history of the spider, its life cycle, all the different types of webs that spiders spin (knitting patterns of spiders, if you will), the strength of the silk, how the silk helps trap its prey or helps it flee from its predators. The author gives the young reader an anatomy lesson whereby the reader learns the body parts and functions of the various body parts – and there is the added bonus of comparing the anatomy of the spider to the anatomy of other insects.

Students will also follow simple directions to make an easy "spider sandwich" snack that we will eat at the end of class. Parent participation/ assistance may be required to help students make the spider sandwich snack, especially for younger learners.

30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Not recommended for students that are exceptionally scared of spiders. There are real life images of spiders in the read aloud book but otherwise no real spiders.
We will be reading aloud a book titled Spiders by Gail Gibbons, a non fiction book about spiders written specifically for young children.
