Learners will be introduced to high-frequency Spanish using a variety of movement, songs, stories and games. Each child's efforts will be celebrated often! Let your child's first experience with Spanish help them fall in love with language. :) The goal for each 4 week session will be to be able to perform 1 Spanish nursery song and/or retell 1 story from class. With each session, students will be able to introduce themselves in more detail (name, feelings, age, girl/boy, likes,...
I did not learn Spanish traditionally. I learned as a young adult by hanging out with Spanish speakers, traveling to, and living abroad in Spanish speaking countries. I take a more natural approach to language learning. I want to honor the fact that every child learns at their own speed, and that every child who is fluent in 1 language has the ability to be fluent in another given sufficient time. I am married to a Spanish speaker and am a certified Spanish teacher. I have taught Spanish using comprehensible input (CI) for the last 8 years. Using this approach I I was named District Rookie Teacher of the Year in 2012 and was nominated for Building Teacher of the Year in 2016. I have presented at local and state conferences, and won a Gifted Students Educator's grant. I have also mentored teachers across the country.
Websites and videos may be used as supplementary material throughout the week. I also encourage trips to the library to check out books and movies in Spanish as well as attendance to any Hispanic cultural events where you live. All links will be provided.
20 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Advanced Mid fluency and proficiency in Spanish take roughly 480-560 hours to achieve. Using untargeted CI as instruction, Novice High proficiency can be obtained in approximately 95 instructional hours.
