Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Beginner Level
What is Sensational Story Time? It’s a story time built just for you. No sitting still required. Fidget, wiggle, and squirm! Enjoy squishing, stretching, and shaping air dry clay. Enjoy the textures, or create imaginative items. It’s your choice.

Each class will have an engaging story: fantastic fairy tales, meaningful messages, awesome adventures, and more. We’ll use air dry clay because it doesn’t get sticky or flaky. High fun, low mess. Various techniques and tools will be shown but are optional. The focus is on the process, not an end product.

Sensory seekers will love squishing and shaping the playdough or clay. Sensory avoiders can rest assured that air-dry clay is a fantastic alternative to the playdough they are probably used to. It’s less sticky and won’t get flaky with use. Be sure to check the handout in the welcome post for a gluten-free playdough recipe if you’d rather make than buy.

This interactive class will encourage the development of social skills by creating a safe space for self-expression. Feeling secure and valued are the foundations upon which confidence and independence are built. Learners will have opportunities to practice taking turns, sharing their ideas, and celebrating each others’ progress. Guided clean up will gradually develop learners’ sense of responsibility and care for their belongings.

How is this class different than the school age version?
Same great sensory friendly focus, for a younger audience.
All the fun, imagination, and support of my older class, with books specially selected to engage younger leaners. We’ll also use a fewer tools and techniques (optional) to work with the air dry clay.

Learning Needs
This class is specifically designed to be welcoming and engaging to learners who struggle with sensory issues, whether NT or ND. Air dry clay is a low mess way to engage in sensory play. Learners can just enjoy the texture or create art.
Parental Guidance
All books are developmentally appropriate in subject matter and length for the recommended age level of the class. I am flexible on enrollment age so that learners may join the class that is the best fit. Class is designed for learners who struggle with sitting still, and/or have extra sensory needs. This includes but is not limited to neurodivergent learners. This class is appropriate for both sensory seekers and sensory avoiders who need extra encouragement. If your learner needs additional accommodations, please let me know privately. If you need a different class time, please ask. I will do my best to meet schedule requests. You do not need to own the books for class. You will need the air dry clay and related supplies in the supply list.
Pre-Requisites
Learners should be trusted not to try to eat the air dry clay. For learners that might try to eat it, I recommend the gluten free playdough recipe in the welcome post.
Supply List
Your learner MUST have supplies to get the most out of class.

1 Air dry clay
This brand is certified gluten free. I have used the white. The texture is not sticky and it dries as it is shaped. No puffing or shrinking. Some reviews of darker colors, especially black, complain about stickiness and trouble drying, so I would stick with lighter colors. https://a.co/d/ifj5oIU

If you would prefer to make it rather than buy, there is a gluten free playdough recipe in the welcome handout. It is less sticky and flaky than most playdough recipes/brands.

2 Dedicated washable markers - you can color on white air dry clay and work the color through without staining hands or surfaces

3 Optional tools - this set is just an example. Similar items are fine.

4 Cleaning and storage items:
a) storage container - ziplock style bag or air tight container with lid
b) open plastic container/small tub for tools (adults will want to set this to soak with dish soap and/or baking soda, rinse, and let dry after class)
c) baby wipes or damp cloth
 1 file available upon enrollment
