Class Experience

US Grade Preschool
Could your busy young Spanish-speaker benefit from practice with numbers? In this class designed for young children who understand Spanish*, we will have fun with math through games, stories, and songs focused around fun food themes. This course is designed for kids who have not yet mastered either counting, number recognition, patterns, or subtracting single digit numbers. Our number stories and worksheets incorporate simple written equations, working with these small numbers in concrete and practical ways, like pretending store scenarios in which we buy ice cream and fruit. We will also introduce skip counting within ten as well as fractions. (This course is slightly more challenging than my "Preschool Animal Math" course, and a good follow-up to that one!)

This is the flexible-schedule version of the course with no live class meetings. Learners will WATCH the weekly lessons fully in Spanish at their convenience, RESPOND singing that weeks' number song in a video if they feel comfortable, demonstrating their counting practice, and/or sharing their completed worksheet(s), and ENGAGE with the teacher and other learners through our weekly extension challenge. I respond to weekly learner-submitted videos with my personalized video feedback.

In each weekly video we: (1) begin with a numbers song or poem, (2) engage in a number story, (3) play a number game, and (4) sing a closing numbers song all fully in Spanish. (See Sources for more information.) I use both manipulatives like a felt board as well as screen share depending on the lesson or activity.

Week 1 - Helado (Ice cream)
Concepts practiced: Counting, subtraction within four, adding and comparisons
Extension challenge: Design your own ice cream cone with as many scoops as you like for us to count. Count and tell the number of scoops on your teacher's and classmates' cones.
Week 2 - Pizza
Concepts practiced: Counting, skip counting within twelve, patterns
Extension challenge: Create a pattern for your classmates to say what comes next. Complete your classmates' patterns.
Week 3 - Fruta (Fruit)
Concepts practiced: Counting, subtraction within six, patterns
Extension challenge: Present us with an a subtraction challenge and see if the other learners and I can solve it! Can you solve ours?
Week 4 - Pastel (Cake)
Concepts practiced: Counting, introduction to fractions, number recognition
Extension challenge: Class party! We each draw a cake to share with lines showing the right amount of pieces so that all classmates and the teacher get one piece each.

I will provide weekly worksheets to practice the number concepts further. Text within the worksheets is in Spanish.

Note that written posts may be partially or fully in English, but my spoken feedback to learners will be fully in Spanish.

*These students may be--for example--heritage speakers, children who have attended an immersion preschool, or "life-time speakers" with a parent or caregiver who has spoken to them in Spanish since infancy.
