This class prepares students for the SHSAT Reading and Writing section with in-class explicit instruction, guided practice, and independent practice. Students also learn strategies specific to the SHSAT.
Class experience
The SHSAT consists of 114 questions that must be answered within 180 minutes. The test is split into two sections, English Language Arts and Mathematics. A total of 20 questions (10 from each section) will not be scored. Students will not know which items are not being scored. There is no time limit for either section – students need only complete the entire test within the 180-minute time limit. This course prepares students for the ELA section of the SHSAT. The student will come away with greater familiarity with SHSAT skills. This will help to alleviate the anxiety that typically accompanies a test experience of this sort, particularly a test that carries this kind of weight. The goal here is to instill familiarity and gather confidence in the face of this challenging test.
