Description
Class Experience
I have designed and taught online and face-to-face college courses as well as middle and high school programs for over fifteen years. I've seen how writing has been sucked dry of its joy and how students are told about "rules" that don't really exist anywhere except inside the classroom. I have supported myself my entire life as a a writer: proposal writer, ghost writer, novelist, short stories, science writer and full, tenured professor. I agree with Stephen King: writing has made my life a more pleasant place to be, and I want to share this with my students. I am passionate about what I do and truly believe that if you can write well, you will be better able to meet the challenges life offers. I want students to succeed in life and, if they go on to college, they need basic writing skills to earn good grades. I want to turn around the tide of lost students I see who do not understand how to write a strong paper and don't care about what they write. It is not their fault--they have been taught that writing academic papers is "boring" or simply something to get through. Nothing could be further from the truth.
There will be written work due and reading for discussions in class
Nothing to purchase. I use a lot of Youtube for homework assignments. Students will need access to a library or home library in order to produce book references (in addition to online sources). Though this course is focused on organizing a paper, if I determine there are challenges the student faces that impede writing, I will offer outside resources online they may utilize (free).
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
2 hours per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
For older students, we may discuss physician assisted suicide, abortion, gun control, legalization of drugs, or other highly politicized topics etc. for an argument paper. I leave the topics open and sometimes students choose these to write about. If parents do not wish a particular subject to be addressed, they should contact me.
