PreK | Kindergarten | Math Talks: Develop Number Sense & Problem Solving
The perfect introduction to PreK Kindergarten number sense, mental math and problem solving! This on going corse will focus on various strategies to represent and identify numbers from 1 to 10, subitizing, introduce composing and decomposing, addition and subtraction, and strategies for solving story problems.

In this fun, interactive class, I introduce number sense, mental math and problem solving. Students will start by warming up our 'math brains' by subitizing or math song. We will then have a mini lesson that will focus on a various strategies and tools to build a strong mental math foundation. Mini lessons will consist of a lesson to help students develop deep understanding of number relationships, fluency in recognizing quantities and confidence in independent problem solving. After our mini lesson we will solve a story problem together, using interactive NearPod story boards. We will use several strategies to solve each problem and check our thinking. I will incorporate a verity of visuals, songs and math tools to meet every students individual learning style. Mental math and problem solving are the foundation for a rich math curriculum, this class is perfect for building a strong foundation for your student! After each class, students will be given access to the lesson in NearPod, to reinforce what was learned during class and to further practice in an engaging, interactive format. Course mini lesson outline: Week 1&2: Part/Part/Whole Mat | Composing Week 3&4: Part/Part/Whole Mat | Decomposing Week 5&6: Number Bonds | Composing Week 7&8: Number Bonds | Decomposing Week 9&10: Ten Frames | Composing Week 11&12: Ten Frames | Decomposing Just joining class? Don't worry concepts repeat every 12 weeks, with new story problems. Students can stick with the class beyond 12 weeks with out repeating story problems!
Learning Goals
The student will: identify quantities to 10 quickly, use a variety of ways to represent numbers 0-10, be able to determine the difference between composing and decomposing numbers, use a variety of strategies to compose and decompose numbers 0-10, determine the operation needed to solve a given story problem, use strategies to correctly solve and explain their thinking
