Prefix & Suffix Galore

Many words in our English language can be broken down to find the root or base word and a prefix and/or suffix. Let's look at rarely used words, using context clues to expand our vocabulary.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
During this one time class, I will cover the following topics: prefixes, suffixes, root or base words, vocabulary, and using context clues. Primarily , this class will be structured as a lecture and discussion. My screen will be shared, so that learners can see the whiteboard and a word document. I will begin the lesson by displaying prefixes by themselves and asking learners if they know any of the meanings. If they share correct answers, I'll add the meanings. We will proceed to look examples of words that have prefixes they were not sure about, and break the word down into the prefix and base or root word. Finally, we'll look at sentences with words that have prefixes. We'll use context clues to figure out the meanings of words and discuss how adding prefixes changes the meaning of the sentences. After we look at prefixes, we will move onto suffixes and follow the same gameplan. If there is time at the end of the lesson, I will ask the learners to tell or write their own sentences that contain at least one prefix or suffix. Throughout the lesson, I will encourage learners to take notes and they are welcome to ask questions to deepen their understanding of the topics.

My teaching style tends to be demonstrator because I do show knowledge in what I am teaching, but also use the learners' impute to modify the lesson as I teach the concepts. While we are doing the class, the lesson may change because of our discussions. However, the end goals will be the same:
-Identify prefixes, suffixes, and base or root words
-Recognize words containing a prefix and/or suffix withing a sentence
-Use context clues to figure out meanings of words and sentences
-Expand the learners' vocabulary

Before class starts, I will have an outline for the class on the classroom page. I highly suggest printing that so the learner can easily take notes during class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from University of Central Missouri
I have taught my twins and children in public schools a variety of language arts skills. I have taught in multiple states and am aware of the state standards that schools require in different grades. My expertise and bachelor's degree in education qualifies me to teach language arts skills for grades K-6th. My background with homeschooling my twins, who are now doing 7th grade work, and other homeschool students has allowed me to practice reading comprehension and writing skills on a daily basis. Between my professional experience before having children and being the primary teacher for my children since covid, I am well qualified to teach any language arts skills to elementary and middle school aged children.
