Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
In this ongoing course, students will practice phonemic awareness with an experienced teacher.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear how spoken sounds are blended and manipulated to make words. Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound in a word. Changing just one phoneme can make an entirely new word! For instance, imagine changing the /c/ sound in cat to /m/. What is your new word? (mat!)

Having strong phonemic awareness sets students up for success when they begin decoding, reading, and writing words. This class is ideal for kindergarten and first grade students. I allow a flexible age range for advanced learners or students who need review to join.

In this class, we will practice rhyming, alliteration, blending, deletion, segmentation, identifying first/last sound, and phoneme manipulation.

We will learn by using chants/songs, hand signals, and whole-group games.
Students will interact with peers and the teacher by using call-backs and total physical response (thumbs up/down to show if they agree, hand signals for segmentation).
I have a familiar, consistent, and fun teaching style that allows students to feel safe and comfortable in the classroom!

I have a fun, consistent, and familiar teaching style which allows students to feel safe and comfortable in the classroom.
I do not cancel for low enrollments. If your student is the only learner in class, I will still plan to teach.
I accept transfer requests with 24 hour notice to the class start time.
Per Outschool policy, I do NOT refund for missed class.

*Note that weekly phonemic awareness focuses repeat. Content will cycle every calendar year in September. Learners are welcome to join anytime. Parents are responsible for keeping track of when their child was enrolled to avoid repeated lessons, if desired. Learners are invited to stay in the class for repeated lessons when useful and applicable.
