Pre-K-Kindergarten Reading Tutor: One-On-One (25 Mins)

Hello, I am Amy Nishikata.  I am an AMS certified Montessori Guide specializing in language development. I hold certifications in the Science of Reading in Early Childhood Education and Montessori Applied to Children at Risk.  I have more than twenty five years of lead teaching experience in the classroom in addition to teaching and tutoring children online for more than four years.

I am offering weekly individualized reading tutoring designed to foster a strong reading foundation and fill any gaps in the learning to read process for your child. Learners are encouraged to enroll from 1-3 times a week at times that fit their schedule. 

This program is adapted to your learner based on an initial assessment and observations.  Lessons will include fun hands on activities to support the five essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. 

My teaching incorporates effective Montessori materials and Phonological Awareness strategies based on the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Kindergarten Curriculum.   Phonemic Awareness focuses on the phonemes (sounds) of letters.

My classes are learner-directed and have a predictable routine to support confidence and comprehension. I am observant and I will adapt lessons to follow your learner and take the necessary time to build a strong foundation.  

My classes are designed to be joyful, warm and engaging.  I share puppets, songs, and stories to enrich language learning. Children fall in love with Grey Squirrel the puppet who will be joining us. 

My weekly lessons include the following: 

1.Greeting Song to invite Grey Squirrel the puppet to class

2.Phonemic Awareness Warm Up (Heggerty Phonemic Skills Games which includes practicing: Syllables, Rhyming, Onset fluency, Oral Blending of Compound Words, Isolating Final Sound, Blending words, Letter Naming, Simple Poetry Memorization, Fingerplays). Sound Game with beautiful objects.

3. The Alphabet Song
4. Phonics: Automaticity Practice using a Letter Deck
5. Customized Reading activity based on the child's readiness. Encoding and Decoding*
6. Sharing time
7. Goodbye Song


I have permission to use the Primary Phonics book series by Barbara Makar for learners who are ready.  

After registration, thank you for providing as much information as you can about your child's experiences with letters, letter sounds,  feelings regarding reading, and if your child has been showing interest in writing letters or has any challenges.  I can also help children develop penmanship skills.
