This class uses the Pre-AP Theater framework provided by the College Board. Please note that while this class uses this framework for practice, this is not a College Board-approved course and while prepares students for the academic rigor of higher-level coursework, does not count towards credits or a qualifying exam. Students will be able to: Define and explain the basic elements and principles of theater. Analyze theatrical spaces and understand their impact on performance. Read and interpret a play script effectively, and critically watch a theater production. Identify and differentiate between various genres and styles of theater. Understand and describe the roles and responsibilities of key professionals in theater, including the actor, director, producer, and playwright. Appreciate the importance and contributions of the set, costume, lighting, and sound teams in a theatrical production. Trace and discuss the broad outlines of theater history. Recognize and evaluate the role and influence of theater in society and culture through examples of applied theater. Appreciate the unique characteristics and features of musical theater. Understand and appreciate the diversity of global theater traditions and styles. Apply knowledge of theater principles and roles to plan a basic set, costume, lighting, and sound design for a selected scene. Engage in thoughtful discussion and critique of various aspects of theater, demonstrating an ability to synthesize and apply learned concepts.
Luke Ferrell is a New Jersey based professional stage director and teaching artist. He has taught both secondary and higher education classes in the areas of acting, musical theater, public speaking, and other areas of arts and academia.
Homework Offered
Students will be assigned various assignments, readings, and viewings throughout the course to gauge progress and understanding.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Students will receive written and verbal feedback on assignments and exercises throughout the course. Should a student require a letter grade for their academic plan, please reach out to me and I would be happy to provide this option.Grades Offered
Course materials and readings will be made freely available to students. Outschool will be used to for live course meetings and communication with the instructor and classmates. This course utilizes Canvas as a learning management system. Students will be able access course materials, assignments, and assessments through Canvas.

This is a college-level course meant to prepare students for higher-level coursework, critical thinking, and analysis. Source material may include offensive language and sensitive topics. Parents should hold space for students to discuss difficult topics outside of class. Students may request alternate assignments or source material at any time.
