1 live meeting
1 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This class will investigate the concepts of placement and absolute value of positive and negative numbers on the real number line. Using these concepts, addition and subtraction for integers will be defined to create proficiency in these operations. The classes will not simply present rules for operations without conceptual understanding. This ensures the students will have extreme confidence in their answers and retain mastery throughout their academic experience. Using the sign identification method, students will recognize the powerful method that will eradicate common errors solely based on incorrect signage and see relationships between different orders of subtraction between integers. Also, the uniqueness of opposites on the number line and its importance to equation solving (using additive inverses to isolate variables)
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to determine absolute value on the real number line and use it to determine sums and differences between positive and negative numbers
Learners will establish algorithms for products and quotients of positive/negative integers.
Other Details
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Arkansas Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
I have been teaching in Arkansas since 1979 and I continue to love what I do. Whether I am in the classroom with 30 students in a math class , tutoring one-on-one with a student who needs help in a particular subject, presenting a workshop on test taking strategies for the ACT or SAT, or just helping kids to apply what they have learned in a specific job related task, I always feel confident and satisfied in the role I have to play in this world.
In my career, I have taught all levels of math and Science, but I particularly enjoy working with students who have had difficulty learning in the past with concepts. I believe all students can learn given the appropriate explanation that fits their specific perceptions and level of cognition.
My teaching philosophy is to observe the students, modify the instruction to best satisfy their particular learning styles, and continually monitor and adjust as needed.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy learning new things and reminding myself what it is like to be out of my element. I believe as teachers, we must always focus on the perceptions of our students and sometimes that means walking a mile in their shoes.
