This is a high-involvement and discussion-based class. Students will be required to participate actively in each class. If there are printouts for the day, they will be posted at least 24 hours in advance. If students cannot access a printer, materials will be viewable on the screen. This math course aligns with a typical pre algebra math curriculum. However, it is designed also to prepare students to take Algebra 1 as the next course. Students should have a good understanding of the following concepts: fractions, decimals, percentages, and integer operations. Understand ratios, proportions, rates, writing, solving, and graphing one step equations involving variables. This is a problem based learning course, which means students will explore mathematics using complex problems and activities rather than just listening to lectures. Students are highly encouraged to come to class with cameras and microphones on for the best class experience. After each class, students will be given a homework assignment and written and/or video notes that correlate with the lesson. If students complete and turn in the homework, I will give them individual feedback and keep track of their progress. It is highly recommended that students complete the homework each week. Students enrolled for an entire semester will receive an individual transcript at the end of the semester with their strengths and weaknesses. The course will follow the following schedule (Spring 2025): Week of Jan. 6: Linear Equations in Two Variables Week of Jan. 13:Standard Form and Slope Intercept Form Week of Jan. 20:Graphing and Writing Equations for a Line Week of Jan. 27: Equations, Graphs, and their Solutions Week of Feb. 3: Introduction to Systems of Equations Week of Feb. 10: Types of Solutions to Systems of Equations Week of Feb. 17: Solving Systems of Equations (by substitution and elimination) Week of Feb. 24: Writing and Solving Systems of Equations Week of March 3:(Meet 4x) Understanding, Interpreting and Graphing Functions Week of March 10: (Meet 2x) Linear Functions Week of March 17: No Class Week of March 24: Linear Functions in Geometry Week of March 31: Associations in Data: Scatter Plots and Line of Best Fit Week of April 7: Linear Models and Categorical Data Week of April 14: Squares and Square Roots Week of April 21: Pythagorean Theorem Week of April 28: Pythagorean Theorem and Irrational Numbers Week of May 5: Rational and Irrational Numbers Week of May 12: Make Up Week/Review Week

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think
I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.
I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
