Intermediate Level
NOTE: Students should have good knowledge of fractions, decimals, percents and being able to convert any one of them to the other two prior to enrollment. This course description should be read in full, especially if enrolling close to the first day of class. This is an introduction to algebra, and depending on other factors like a student's previous experience with it, a reintroduction. Students should already have a good handle on basic math, as in K-6 concepts. Algebra I expands on pre-algebra skills. For the unprepared, math only gets harder. This course is meant for students who have completed Math Without Pressure or Math Without Pressure 2. Those who have not should read the whole course description to ensure readiness for this level of math. Get in touch first if there has been ongoing trouble with the subject. Note-taking In the spirit of producing independent and responsible students, notes should be taken during class. Without it, classwork and homework assignments can be difficult or impossible. Classwork This will provide the needed practice for the concepts taught in the lecture. Notes should be taken to assist completing it. Help with math problems will be available from the teacher and classmates while class is in session. Questions are always welcome, even after class via messaging. Homework It will be assigned in each class, logged for student and parent notification, and reviewed at the next meeting. About three to six hours per week should be allotted for it. Submitting homework is optional. Daily Review The homework will be reviewed by going over the answers to each problem when class starts each day. Problems will be explained and reworked on student request or when mistakes occur. Periodic Review Previous concepts will be reviewed to determine the level of competency and understanding in the subject. There are no tests. Teaching Style There are class rules despite the approachable, forgiving, quick to smile, corny, and patient teacher. Learners should want to write on the whiteboard to display their skills. Students will be asked direct questions for discussion and interaction. Here are the concepts to be studied: The number line Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers Transition from basic math symbols to algebraic ones If there's time, some or all of the following will be added: Order of operations Exponents Square roots Algebraic expressions Introduction to word problems Questions are always welcome in the classroom. Students who are at least 14 or have an IEP that allows it can use calculators.

For most of the last two decades, I've seen many students assigned grade-level math that they were nowhere near ready to take, much less succeed in...There's getting into Algebra I, and then there's being able to function in it.
